The Goals and the Objectives of the Tech Initiation Event

The Goal:

  • Alleviate misconceptions that seniors have about technology.

The Objectives:

  • The first objective is to determine the level of understanding the senior has about the benefits of going online.
  • The second objective is to open a discussion about the activities that online seniors are interested in.
  • The third objective is to provide the attending senior with information on the Pro’s and Con’s of available products on the market.
  • The fourth objective is to break down any fears they may have about going online. After all, it is their peers that invented the technology that we enjoy today.

Six steps recommended for a successful Tech Initiation Event

  • Assign a staff member at your High School or College responsible for contacting the senior residence or organization.
  • Get all volunteers to sign the behavior protocol. See attached PDF titled Behavior Protocol for Tech Initiation Coordinators (Volunteers).
  • Prepare a one-page document with the outline of topics to be discussed at your Event. (to be given to participants)
  • Make copies of the document titled: Which technical device is right for you. Use it as one of the topics to be discussed. (to be given to participants)
  • Make sure you have access to the techno55plus.info page on a computer. Show them how to use it as a tool for information and resources.
  • At the end of the Event, don’t forget to ask everyone for their opinion and suggestions.

Research your approach and the topics you will be discussing with the seniors.

  • Look into the reasons why seniors feel intimidated by technology. Read the information contained in the links listed below.
  • Look into the history of tech devices and software. Who is given credit for the invention of the cellphone?  the personal computer?  etc… Do you know the role that women have played in computer science ? Go to the links about these topics listed below.
  • Look into what seniors find interesting online.
  • Read the various PDFs and the information provided in the links on the techno55plus.info page titled Tech Initiation Coordinator.

Prepare the material to be used in the Event

  • Prepare your agenda for the meeting. Decide the order you want for the various topics and how much time you intend to allocate for each topic.
  • How are you going to advertise your Tech Initiation Event? Who are you going to invite? Is the Event for the resident of the building or the members of any given organization or will you extend an invitation to seniors in the community.
